Race Equality- Interesting Facts

Facts about Britain

Ethnic minorities make up 7.1 % of the total population and are concentrated in the metropolitan areas. 50 % of these people are below the age of 12.

David Owen's analysis of the 1991 Census shows* :-

Four out of five Caribbean children have one white parent.In the Black-White group,30% are under 5 years old and more than half are under the age of 10.It is a group which is growing rapidly.The total number of mixedrace children grou by 40% in the 1980s and Owen predicts that suchmixed race children will form an increasingly large percentage of theethnic minority population.

Based on 1991 Census figures, mixed race Britains make up only 0.5% of the total populationbut this figure is likely to be a serious under estimate and is expected to rise.The mixed parentage group formed 10% of the total Black and Asian population in 1991.Younger people are more likely to be in mixed race relationships than older people.

*Analysis taken from 'Mixed Feelings - theComplex Lives of Mixed Race Britons' by Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, publishedby The Women's Press, 2001.

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure."

If we could shrink the earth's population to a village of precisely 100 people, with all the existing human ratios remaining the same, there would be :

57 Asians, 21 Europeans, 14 from the Western Hemisphere, both North and South and 8 Africans;

52 would be female and 48 would be male;

70 would be non-white and 30 would be white;

70 would be non-Christian and 30 would be Christian;

89 would be heterosexual and 11 homosexual.

6 people would possess 59% of the entire world's wealth and all 6 would be from the United States;

80 would live in substandard housing;

70 would be unable to read;

50 would suffer from malnutrition;

1 would be near death and 1 would be near birth;

1 (yes, only 1) would have a University education;

1 would own a computer.
